Product description
This MU500-CK microscope camera captures still images at 5.0 megapixels (2592 × 1944) and can stream real-time video to a host computer. The package includes the camera body, a calibration (stage micrometer) kit for accurate measurements, a preinstalled 0.5× reduction lens, and a high-speed USB 2.0 cable. Advanced capture, editing and measuring software is provided and supports Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10, Mac OS X and Linux platforms.
Electronics have been updated and the housing is designed to be more compact and lighter than earlier models. The camera accepts standard C-mount connections and ships with a 23 mm reduction lens adapter so it can be attached to instruments with C-mount or 23 mm photo ports—typical microscope eye tubes, trinocular ports, plus telescopes or endoscopes. With the 0.5× reduction lens fitted the tube measures 23 mm in diameter for broad compatibility. Two eyepiece adapters (30.0 mm and 30.5 mm) are included at no extra charge.
The unit uses a CMOS color sensor and arrives with four mounting options (23 mm, 30 mm, 30.5 mm and C-mount), user instructions, and imaging software that supports measurement overlays, scale bars, annotations and basic image processing. The company is based in the USA and backs each camera with a one-year warranty and lifetime software updates. The camera ships new and factory-sealed.
Pros
- High-resolution 5MP stills (2592×1944)
- Includes calibration kit and eyepiece adapters
- Works with C-mount and 23 mm ports
Cons
- USB 2.0 limits live refresh rate
- Bundled software can feel dated
- Occasional focusing limits at very low magnification
VerdictA capable 5MP imaging camera that delivers high-resolution stills and live video with measurement tools and calibration. Strong for classroom and lab imaging when used with USB 2.0 or faster, but software and refresh rate limitations affect some video workflows.

Oswaldo Cano 3/5
Good image quality but software locked in
The optics deliver a pleasing image, but the camera only works with the manufacturer’s software, which looks dated and forces persistent sidebars and menus. If your workflow needs a full-screen, modern interface you may find the bundled program limiting.

Comes with outdated software on disc
The camera looks well made, but the CD contains an old software build. After downloading the current version the HD mode worked, which hadn’t appeared over the initial USB2.0 setup. The live view still isn’t perfectly smooth and I would like to see USB3.0 support. I ended up returning the unit despite decent optics.

MU series delivers consistent results
These MU cameras are a reliable pick for microscopy imaging. The software is straightforward and the bundle suits hobbyists and professionals who need capable imaging tools.

AJUST'82 SAS 4/5
Precise but static setup
Mounted on a stand the video feed supports precise measurements and careful work, though it’s not designed for dynamic movement.

Perfect companion for my Bresser binocular
This camera complements my binocular microscope well — live observation on the laptop and captured photos are consistently high quality and the unit represents good value.

Poor quality — returned
The unit arrived with unsatisfactory build and image quality for my needs, so I returned it and purchased an alternative camera.

Justin Miller 5/5
Very happy with this camera
Works smoothly with my scope and computer, delivering clear images for routine observations.

Disappointed by strong color fringing
I hoped this would match results from my mirrorless camera but saw pronounced chromatic aberration around highlights. I tested both eyepiece coupling and a Leica video bridge with a 0.5× adapter; the fringing persisted with this camera but did not appear when I used my mirrorless through the same adapters. I also noticed a hazy cast on the IR filter. Optically the camera has potential, but this issue was a dealbreaker for my applications.

Immediate upgrade for classroom demonstration
Plugging this into my laptop was a big step up from my older handheld camera. Make sure your microscope has a removable eyepiece — the included adapters don’t fit every model. The images show a lot of detail and the software lets you tweak hue, contrast and saturation. Running on an i5 laptop with Windows 7, I used it with a quality monocular scope and appreciated the pixel-measurement option after using the calibration slide. Great for teaching where everyone needs to see the same field.

Handy for travel, limited for live video
Bought to photograph thin sections abroad where samples can’t be exported. The camera splits into two pieces for easier packing and feels robust. Still images are fine, but the refresh rate is too low to smoothly track stage rotation; rotating a polarizer gives a usable effect. It’s awkward to manipulate the scope from the screen until you gain experience, so I often use the regular eyepiece. The calibration slide is a welcome inclusion.

Faster and more usable than our older 1.3MP unit
This 5MP camera is noticeably quicker than our older 1.3MP model, which works well for impatient students. Colors render accurately and the software provides useful controls. It performed reliably on a stereo erecting scope, a standard lab microscope and a phase contrast instrument. If you can, opt for 5MP or higher — the extra frame rate and resolution help in teaching and shared viewing. Company support has been responsive in our experience.

cjself 5/5
Solid substitute for my lab camera
I bought this to capture polarized sections that my previous camera struggled with. The sensor produces crisp photos and, although the view is narrower than my overhead unit, stitching panoramas is straightforward. Use a USB 2.0 or faster connection — with one the focus and responsiveness are much better. In my setup I couldn’t focus below about 4×, but at 20× and 40× the images are excellent. The software is approachable and the included stage micrometer makes calibration and adding scale bars quick.
