Product description
This is an official 1981 U.S. Mint Proof Set containing six coins: a Susan B. Anthony dollar, a Kennedy half dollar, a Washington quarter, a Roosevelt dime, a Jefferson nickel and a Lincoln cent. It is the Type 1 variety and every coin in the set carries the San Francisco "S" mint mark.
Metallurgically, the dollar, half dollar, quarter and dime in this set are produced in copper-nickel clad composition, giving those denominations their standard modern appearance and edge treatment. The nickel and cent retain their conventional compositions for the period. The six pieces range from the small cent diameter up to the larger dollar, providing a nice size progression for display and study.
All coins are in proof condition, struck with polished blanks and specially prepared dies to create mirror-like fields and deeply frosted devices. Images are exceptionally sharp and the reflective surfaces are indicative of proof striking methods used by the Mint at that time.
The set comes enclosed in the original U.S. Mint packaging from 1981. These sets are vintage items and are not factory-fresh; the holder or outer packaging can display age-related signs such as minor folds, creases or light scuffs. Buyers should also be aware that Proof Sets produced prior to 1990 were generally issued without a separate certificate of authenticity.
Photographs supplied with listings are stock images intended to represent the quality and appearance of the items offered; purchases are assured to meet the depicted grade and presentation. For collectors, these Proof Sets provide an accessible snapshot of that year's coinage and minting quality.
Collector’s note: U.S. Proof Sets were first issued in 1936 and are prized for their reflective fields and sharp relief created by special dies and polished planchets. They provide an attractive, annual presentation of the Mint’s craftsmanship and are commonly collected to document design changes and minting practice year by year.
