Product description
What’s included: one 5 lb bag of dyed expanded clay pebbles sized approximately 8–10 mm.
Material & manufacture: These beads start as natural clay that’s formed into small nodules then fired at high temperatures to become lightweight, hard, inert pellets. The result is non-toxic, odorless clay spheres safe for plants and aquarium use when rinsed.
Size & feel: The product lists a medium grade of roughly 8–10 mm diameter. The beads are relatively small and smooth compared with coarse LECA grades, so they sit compactly in pots and are gentle around fine roots.
How to use: Rinse before use to remove any surface dust. Use as a top dressing to reduce splashback, as a drainage layer at the bottom of containers, or as a hydroponic medium when combined with a reservoir. Fill one-third to half of a pot for bottom-reservoir setups or layer them with potting mix for orchids and succulents.
Performance notes: The fired clay holds water in its cavities and slows evaporation versus plain stones, helping with moderate moisture retention. It is inert and pH-neutral, and its open structure helps airflow around roots. Because the pebbles are smaller and smoother than coarser grades, they may not wick as aggressively; expectations about porosity and color should be tempered.
Pros
- Clean, inert and pH-neutral medium
- Attractive colors suitable for topdressing
- Good for drainage and reducing soil splash
Cons
- Color tint and shade may differ from images
- 5 lb may be limited for larger pots
- Less porous than coarser LECA—may not wick as much
VerdictThese colored LECA clay pebbles are a tidy, decorative option for small pots, orchids and hydroponic setups where a clean, inert medium is preferred. The beads are made from natural clay and fired to create durable, pH-neutral pellets that are gentler on roots than rougher, coarse clay. They do retain moisture longer than plain gravel and reduce soil splashing, but colors and porosity can vary bet

Tiny, bright pebbles
Really liked how colorful and small they are.

Leaked on first use
Tried them once and water leaked through the setup; ended up messy. Not recommended in my case.

Nice hue, adequate amount for tiny pots
Pleasant color and the small beads worked fine — two small containers were filled with the 2 lb bag.

Does what it says
Works well to improve drainage in my potted plants.

Pretty but not very absorbent
They look great as a decorative top layer, but these smaller beads didn’t soak up water like chunkier LECA. Better for faux displays than for actively wicking moisture to live plants; appearance scores high, function less so.

Wrong shades and poor wicking
Photos showed blue, purple and white but I received brown, dark red and white. They also don’t behave like porous LECA — they dry quickly after soaking and don’t wick moisture up unless fully submerged. Texture felt more like smooth pebbles than true expanded clay. Not suitable for my hydro or semi-hydro needs.

Exactly the right size for my orchid
Perfect fit for my 5" orchid pot. After rinsing there was no dust, and I appreciated being able to buy a smaller quantity and different colors. Very pleased.

Good quality but small bag
The pebbles feel well made and I prefer the non-brown tones, but the 2 lb size is surprisingly modest — the pouch is small and won’t fill a large pot. I used it as a bottom reservoir for rooting cuttings and it serves that purpose, but I probably won’t reorder because the volume felt low for the cost.
