Product description
Professional construction: Each set includes two rectangular ink wells produced from composite materials with a polished finish. The surface is smooth and engineered to resist chipping, allowing repeated use and simple cleaning.
Compact and travel-ready: Each tray measures 5.3 x 2.9 x 0.7 inches (13.5 x 7.5 x 2 cm) and weighs roughly 120 g (0.26 lb), making them easy to carry for outdoor sketching, workshops, or classroom demonstrations.
Designed for ink preparation: The shallow sloped basin collects liquid and provides a dedicated grinding surface for solid ink sticks. To prepare ink, place a small amount of water in the well, hold the ink stick tip against the surface and grind in circular or back-and-forth motions until the desired tone is achieved (ink stick sold separately). The smooth finish also serves as a convenient rest for brushes during practice.
Suitable uses: These trays work well for students, instructors, hobbyists, and workshop settings where durability and portability matter more than a traditional stone feel. They help teach the ritual of preparing ink and provide a practical surface for sumi-e and calligraphy exercises.
Care and handling: Rinse and dry the wells after each session to prevent residue buildup. Store in a ventilated place away from prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the finish. The rectangular, flat-bottom design keeps the tray steady on a desk or table.

Not real stone as described
This product is hard plastic, not stone. It functions, but marketing implying natural stone is misleading and I wish I'd checked other comments first.

Great for a classroom demo
Bought these for a bamboo-ink lesson so students could experience grinding pigment. The kids were thrilled. They feel like hard plastic rather than carved rock, but for teaching and easy storage they worked fine.

Cheap-feeling plastic
Feels inexpensive and is plastic. That sums it up.

Clearly plastic
Not an authentic ink stone — just plastic. Disappointed.

No complaints, performs well
Solid performance; no issues.

Plastic but usable for grinding
The tray is the item only; ink stick must be bought separately. The surface is coarse enough to grind pigment and the slant collects liquid ink well, slowing drying — useful for practice despite being plastic.
