Design Principles

While the kitchen is often called the heart of the home, a living room provides the relaxed gathering space where friends and family can unwind. In Hawaii, outdoor living is abundant, but the living room still plays a central role. The design principles that shape this space—function, focal point, scale and comfort, and a touch of wow—apply everywhere, though they may be expressed differently here. Let’s look at each principle, beginning with function.

Function

Form should follow function. Start by deciding how the living room will be used. Will it be for entertaining, quiet reading, social conversation, TV viewing, or multiple activities at once? Answering those questions guides the furniture layout and determines how much space is needed.

Too often a builder designates a room as a “living room” without allocating space for the furniture that supports its purpose. For hosting and conversation, arrange seating to encourage interaction—avoid forcing everyone into an L-shape or a straight line. For Hale Ahonui, we sketched and modeled the room beginning with furniture. We wanted a conversational seating area for six in a semi-circle and a media wall on one side to allow comfortable TV viewing without sacrificing the social layout.

When planning, mark locations for electrical outlets, switches, and vents so they don’t interfere with art or TV placement. Measure the furniture you plan to use and map it on your floor plan. Orient major pieces toward the focal point and keep primary traffic routes open. As a rule of thumb, position main sofas about 5–10 feet apart; in many cultures, roughly 10 feet often feels comfortable for conversation. Don’t forget to include side and coffee tables so guests have a place for drinks and personal items.

To support both conversation and TV viewing, position the TV console along an adjacent wall while arranging seating in a gentle curve facing the center. This allows a focal media area without breaking the conversational flow.

Also consider practical details: place switches at entrances, outlets where electronics will sit, and keep vents clear of picture placement. Main seating should be oriented toward the room’s focal point while allowing easy movement through the space.

Here’s a small experiment: notice how people in casual conversation usually maintain a certain distance—often around ten to eleven feet. That distance feels natural and comfortable for group conversations. Arrange seating and tables to support that rhythm.

Establishing a Focal Point

A focal point gives the room visual direction. On the mainland, a fireplace or a dramatic piece of art often fills that role. In Hawaii, expansive sliding glass walls that open to views—lanai, pool, and ocean—become the natural focal point. Retractable glass door panels that disappear into the wall create a dramatic, indoor-outdoor living experience and make the view the artwork.

When the view is exceptional, keep walls and art minimal so the opening remains the star. The window wall draws the eye and defines the room’s character; plan seating to take full advantage of it.

When the view is compelling, the room itself needs little decoration—the landscape becomes the art.

Creating a Cozy Scale and Space

A truly inviting living room feels comfortable as soon as you enter. Soft, deep seating, overstuffed pillows, and an arrangement that encourages lounging can make a space irresistibly cozy. Arrange seating in a circle or gentle curve to invite conversation and connection. Small group layouts that seat five or six people are perfect for the Hawaiian “talk story” tradition of relaxed conversation.

Every room benefits from a memorable element. For Hale Ahonui, the living room’s wow factor is an expansive window wall framing an infinity pool that appears to melt into the ocean, possibly accented with fire pots at the pool edge. Thoughtful, dramatic details like this leave a lasting impression and celebrate the place.

Imagine walking through the front door to a view that opens to your living room and then to the shimmering pool and ocean beyond. Arrange seating to face that view and to encourage conversation, include a media wall for shared TV experiences, and select a few dramatic details to create the desired wow. With careful planning of function, focal point, scale, and a signature element, you can create a living room that is both inviting and unforgettable.
