Easy Fall Puppy Chow Snack, also called Muddy Buddies, combines Chex cereal with peanut butter, chocolate and colorful fall or Halloween candies for a crunchy, sweet treat that’s perfect for snacking.

This simple fall snack mix is a favorite with kids and adults alike. Puppy chow delivers that irresistible salty-and-sweet balance — a crunchy base of Rice Chex coated in a chocolate-peanut butter mixture, dusted with powdered sugar, and finished with seasonal candies like candy corn, candy pumpkins, or orange-and-brown M&M’s.

There are lots of variations — you can swap in Oreos or add pretzels for extra crunch — but the basic recipe requires just a few pantry staples:

  • Rice Chex cereal
  • Butter
  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate chips
  • Vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar

How to Make Fall Puppy Chow

Start by melting the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter together in a large microwave-safe bowl. Heat about 30 seconds, stir, then heat another 30 seconds until smooth. You can melt the mixture on the stovetop if you prefer, but the microwave is quick and easy.

Stir in a teaspoon of vanilla, then add the Rice Chex cereal and gently fold until all the pieces are evenly coated with the chocolate-peanut butter mixture.

For the powdered sugar coating, place about half of the powdered sugar into a large gallon freezer bag. Add the chocolate-coated cereal, then top with the remaining powdered sugar. Seal the bag and shake until the cereal is fully coated. This two-step sugar method helps prevent clumping and makes it easier to get an even dusting.

Pour the coated cereal into a large serving bowl and stir in your choice of fall candies. Candy corn, candy pumpkins and seasonal M&M’s are festive options; you can also add peanut butter M&M’s, pretzels, or a sprinkle of pumpkin spice for extra autumn flavor.

Use any fall or Halloween candies you like. A pinch of pumpkin spice can be added to the powdered sugar for a seasonal twist.
