I prefer eating smoothies with a spoon—basically a habit of enjoying them like soft-serve. Since getting a high-speed blender, I’ve been making ultra-thick, soft-serve-style smoothies and fruit-based “ice creams” for breakfast, after-school snacks, or dessert. They’re sweet and satisfying, full of fruit and vegetables, and usually need no added sweeteners. Best of all, kids think they’re getting a treat.


Easy superfood smoothie bowl recipe
This recipe is loaded with powerhouse ingredients: wild berries (antioxidants), goji berries (a fruit high in protein and vitamin C), raw cacao powder (a source of magnesium and iron), nut butter (healthy fats and protein), and hemp, chia or flax seeds (fiber and omega-3s). Frozen bananas create a thick, creamy texture without ice. Tip: peel any extra ripe bananas and freeze them in a bag so you always have a stash for smoothies.


How to make a smoothie bowl
A high-speed blender is ideal to process very thick mixtures; a Vitamix or similar model will handle the dense texture. If you don’t have a high-speed blender, a food processor can work, or add an extra 1/2 cup of milk and use a regular blender to make a pourable smoothie. Follow these tips for a smooth, creamy bowl:
- Add the liquid first: Pour milk or coconut water into the blender first to help ingredients circulate around the blade.
- Next add frozen fruit: Frozen berries, mango, pineapple or cherries are great options. Frozen banana gives a rich, creamy texture without the need for ice.
- Follow with more delicate foods: Add leafy greens, nut butters, seeds or softer add-ins last so they blend evenly.
- Use a tamper or pause to stir: If your blender includes a tamper, use it to press ingredients toward the blade and increase speed gradually until thick and smooth.

Serve the smoothie in bowls and top like a sundae for texture and visual appeal. Fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, granola, coconut flakes and cacao nibs all add crunch and extra nutrition. Play with different toppings and combinations to keep it fun and satisfying.

Superfood Berry Smoothie Bowl
Ingredients
- 1–1 1/2 cups nut milk (or milk of your choice)
- 2 frozen bananas, each cut into thirds
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and/or raspberries)
- 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder
- 2 tablespoons almond butter (or nut butter of your choice)
- 1–2 tablespoons goji berries (optional)
- 1 tablespoon hemp, chia or flax seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch sea salt
- Toppings: cacao nibs, toasted coconut flakes, chopped toasted nuts, fresh berries, sliced fruit or granola
Instructions
- Pour 1 cup of milk into the blender, add the bananas, then add the remaining ingredients.
- Blend until smooth, using a tamper or pausing to stir if needed. Add a splash more milk if the mixture is too thick to blend.
- Divide into bowls and garnish with your chosen toppings.
