Product description
What’s included: The Sidekick ships as a combined headcollar and leash system—one unit that functions as a gentle nose-guidance halter and converts into a slip lead for convenience.
Materials and sizes: Constructed from a soft, durable braided rope, the model shown is the regular 3/8" thickness in turquoise. The rope is soft against skin and designed to apply subtle pressure where needed; alternate thicknesses are available for slimmer muzzles. Hardware points are reinforced to prevent accidental loss or slippage.
How it’s used: Place the nose loop so it rests comfortably just above the muzzle and clip the leash to the headcollar attachment for directional control. The rope creates a mild cue across the nose, similar to a guiding touch, encouraging the dog to turn toward the handler rather than brace and pull. When appropriate, switch the configuration to a slip-lead mode mid-walk to maintain slack and allow more freedom once the dog is focused.
Behavioral benefits: The Sidekick is intended to help with leash reactivity, overstimulation, fear-based pulling, and general excitement. It’s frequently used by trainers to teach loose-leash walking and to build cooperative responses without relying on aversive corrections. A number of training facilities, including K9 Lifeline, incorporate this style of tool into daily routines.
Pros
- Convertible headcollar and slip-lead in one
- Soft rope construction is gentle on nose and hands
- Helps reduce pulling and improve focus on walks
Cons
- Requires correct sizing for narrow muzzles
- Not a guaranteed fix for every reactive dog
- May need occasional manual adjustment during use
VerdictThe Sidekick is a hybrid headcollar-plus-leash intended for everyday walks and training sessions. It applies gentle, directional guidance at the nose to discourage pulling without causing pain, while its sturdy rope construction stands up to strong dogs. It won’t instantly solve every issue for every dog, but many users report faster focus, fewer lunges, and easier handling—especially for those wh

Comfortable and trainer-friendly
The Sidekick is more comfortable and less restrictive than other headcollars I’ve tried. My dog tolerates it well and it gives me improved guidance during busy training sessions. I like that the leash and halter work together straight out of the package—no mixing and matching required. It helps with focus without limiting natural movement.

From a Labrador: works great!
I’m a big, excitable Labrador and used to pull my humans everywhere. With this leash my walker gained control on the first outing; I still get excited but can’t drag her down the street anymore. It’s sturdy and reliable—important for a strong dog like me—and I’m not choking against my collar the whole walk, which feels nicer.

A genuine change for trainers
With over three decades training dogs, I’ve tested many control tools. This system stands out: safe to use, easy to fit, includes a fail-safe attachment to prevent escapes, and it’s comfortable for both dog and handler. It focuses attention without causing pain and converts into a slip lead. Excellent option for handlers with limited mobility—highly recommended.

Not as impressive as other headcollars
I didn’t feel it matched the value compared with some alternatives. When the dog pulls the under-nose hook tightens and must sometimes be loosened by hand, which isn’t ideal on the move. I prefer adjustable nose loops I can tweak without stopping. In my experience a different halter reduced pulling and anxiety more effectively.

Simple and effective
Has worked wonders for us. I recommend it for dogs that pull.

Finally a tool that stops pulling
This was the only device that stopped our dog from pulling and that she didn’t recoil from. If she’s calm halfway through a walk I can flip it into slip-lead mode and she keeps walking well. Very effective overall—I only wish it came in pink as she gets called a “good boy” while wearing turquoise!

Could use a longer option
I like the design but when used as a nose halter it feels a bit short. As a slip lead it’s slightly longer. Offering a second length option would make it more versatile for different leash preferences.

Sizing matters for slim muzzles
Good product overall. I tried the 3/8" on my 29 lb mini Aussie and it was too bulky around her slim muzzle. After switching to the 1/4" version it fit comfortably and worked very well—she stopped pawing at it and walked much better with small corrections. My tip: choose by muzzle shape, not only by weight.

Made walking possible again
I have balance and hand-pain issues and couldn’t walk my two pullers for years. On our 45 lb dog she relaxed immediately—loose leash, less reactivity, and better response to commands; my child can now walk her safely. Our 120 lb dog needed more repetition: first week had consistent tension, then gradually improved to more slack time and better focus after a few weeks.

Immediate difference for a traumatized rescue
Our one-year rescue, a heavy-muscled retriever mix with rope and collar scars, used to explode with excitement and then pull like a freight train. He became overstimulated quickly by anything resembling restraint. Using this headcollar reduced his frantic lunging and gave us much more control on first walks. He is strong for his size, but the Sidekick helped him settle and walk more calmly.
