This Hot Chocolate Poke Cake is a rich chocolate cake topped with hot fudge and a hot chocolate whipped cream mousse.

Hello — I’m Julianne from Beyond Frosting. I visit this site from time to time to share favorite desserts, and today I’m excited to bring you another chocolate recipe in honor of Joan, who adored chocolate. If you love chocolate, this cake will feel like a warm hug.
This Hot Chocolate Poke Cake is one of the most irresistible cakes I’ve made. It’s straightforward to prepare and perfect for gatherings or a cozy night at home. The base starts with a boxed chocolate cake mix, which makes it a great option when time is limited but the flavor must be exceptional.

The cake gets its extra richness from warm milk blended with hot chocolate mix, folded into the batter along with sour cream, eggs, oil, and vanilla. After baking, the poke technique—poking holes across the surface—lets the filling sink in so every bite is moist and intensely chocolatey. For this version I use hot fudge sauce to fill the holes, but chocolate pudding or sweetened condensed milk would also work beautifully.

What truly sets this cake apart is the hot chocolate whipped cream topping. It’s thicker and creamier than traditional whipped cream—almost mousse-like—because the heavy cream is whipped to stiff peaks and flavored with additional packets of hot chocolate mix. The texture holds up well and crowns the cake with a delightful, fluffy layer that complements the fudgy filling.
Here are a few practical tips to ensure success:
- Allow the cake to cool slightly after baking—about 15 to 20 minutes—so it’s warm but not piping hot when you poke the holes. Use the end of a wooden spoon or a similarly round tool to make even holes across the top.
- Warm the jar of hot fudge according to its instructions so it’s pourable. Spoon it over the cake, making sure it sinks into the holes. Reserve a little to drizzle on top for presentation.
- Chill the mixing bowl and whisk for the whipped topping for about 15 minutes before whipping the cream. This helps the cream come together quickly and hold its shape. After whipping in the hot chocolate mix, spread the topping over the cooled cake and refrigerate the cake before serving.

Poke cakes are excellent for entertaining because they can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated, allowing flavors to meld. They serve a crowd, travel well, and are a favorite at potlucks and holiday gatherings. If you’re bringing dessert to a party, this cake will be a crowd-pleaser—especially among chocolate lovers.

Hot Chocolate Poke Cake
This Hot Chocolate Poke Cake pairs a moist chocolate cake with a hot fudge soak and a whipped hot chocolate topping for a dessert that tastes like liquid hot cocoa in cake form.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup milk, warmed
- 2 packets hot chocolate mix (.85 oz each)
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 3 large eggs
- ¾ cup light sour cream
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the topping:
- 1 jar hot fudge sauce (about 13 ounces)
- 1 ¾ cups heavy whipping cream
- 4 packets hot chocolate mix (.85 oz each)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Heat the milk in a microwave-safe bowl for 60–90 seconds until hot. Stir in 2 packets of hot chocolate mix until dissolved and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, sour cream, oil, and vanilla. Add the hot chocolate milk and beat on medium-high until blended. Pour into a 9×13-inch pan and bake 20–24 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool 15–20 minutes.
- While still warm, poke holes all over the cake using the end of a wooden spoon.
- Warm the hot fudge according to the jar instructions and spoon it over the cake so it fills the holes. Reserve a few tablespoons for drizzling. Allow the cake to cool completely.
- Chill a metal bowl and whisk for 15 minutes. Beat the heavy whipping cream until bubbly, add the remaining hot chocolate mix, and continue to beat until stiff peaks form. Spread the whipped topping over the cooled cake and drizzle with reserved hot fudge. Refrigerate after topping.
Notes
This cake is slightly adapted from a classic cake mix recipe and is easily customized—try different hot chocolate flavors or a salted caramel fudge for variation.
