What Is Hummus?

Hummus is a classic Middle Eastern dip made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. It’s versatile—perfect with fresh vegetables, flatbreads, crackers, or as a creamy sandwich spread.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • tahini
  • olive oil
  • fine sea salt
  • garlic
  • lemon
  • canned chickpeas
  • everything bagel seasoning
  • red pepper flakes (optional)

I usually use canned chickpeas and rinse them well. Removing the skins takes a little extra time but makes the hummus exceptionally smooth—worth the effort if you want a velvety texture.

Step-by-Step Instructions

First: Add tahini, olive oil, salt, minced garlic, and lemon juice to a food processor. Pulse until smooth.

Next: Add the chickpeas and cold water. Process until completely smooth, about 2–3 minutes, pausing to scrape down the sides at least once. If the hummus is too thick, add more water a tablespoon at a time until you reach the desired consistency.

Finish: Stir in or pulse in the everything bagel seasoning until evenly distributed. Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil. Sprinkle extra everything bagel seasoning and red pepper flakes on top if desired. Serve with vegetables, pita, crackers, breadsticks, or chips.

A Few Cook’s Notes for Everything Hummus

Peeling the skins from canned chickpeas takes extra time but produces a noticeably smoother hummus, so I recommend it when you can.

If you don’t have everything bagel seasoning, you can buy a blend at most grocery stores or make your own mix of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried minced onion, garlic, and coarse salt.
