Quick Cookie Lightsabers: How to Make Star Wars Treats at Home

I needed a quick favor idea for a Star Wars party I was planning for my son. It was a bit last-minute and I had almost forgotten about party favors, so I had to think fast. Inspiration struck and I made these delightfully silly, quick-to-make Cookie Light Sabers. My son thought they were hilarious, which was perfect since I didn’t have time for anything more elaborate.

Yes, they’re short and a bit fragile — they’ll fall apart if treated like real light sabers — but that’s actually a benefit for a party favor. I wouldn’t encourage rough play with sleeves of cookies, but when they’re dressed up as light sabers it’s hard not to laugh. They’re playful, safe enough because they break easily, and quick to assemble.

What You Need to Make Quick Cookie Light Sabers

  • Single sleeves of cookies (the small boxes that hold a single row)
  • Green and/or red construction paper for the blade
  • Silver or grey duct tape for the handle
  • Invisible tape (Scotch tape) to hold the paper in place
  • About 30 seconds per light saber once you get the hang of it

How to Make Quick Cookie Light Sabers

  1. Remove the sleeve of cookies from the box.
  2. Place the sleeve lengthwise on a sheet of construction paper.
  3. Secure one edge of the paper to the cookies with a small piece of invisible tape.
  4. Roll the paper around the cookie sleeve and tape the seam to keep the “blade” closed.
  5. Fold and tape one end of the paper to close that tip.
  6. Fold and tape the opposite end as well.
  7. If a bit of the sleeve shows at one end, cover it with a small piece of duct tape.
  8. Wrap silver or grey duct tape around the bottom third of the covered sleeve to form a handle.
  9. Repeat for each favor — once you get going the process is very fast, which helps when you need to make a dozen or more.
